People think the government should build free public libraries in every town, however some think it a waste of money. This essay will discuss why providing free public libraries can increase the literacy rate in the country and why free public libraries are not working because people tend to access information from the internet more than the library.
Nowadays, most individuals have smartphones, which can easily access the internet. They use the internet for finding articles and information. These articles and information are likely to be public on many websites, which can be accessed by everyone. People can read them from everywhere, which causes people to stay home more than go to the library. For example, many students mentioned that they read many reports and information from the internet because it is more convenient than reading them from the library. As a result, people tend to read from the internet more than the library.
On the other hand, having free public libraries in every town can increase literacy rate in the country. People who are poor cannot access the library, however having the free public library can provide equal access. People are likely to read more, which can cause them to gain knowledge. For example, the Thai government mentioned that the literacy rate is increasing from 2% to 4% in two years because poor kids are using free public libraries. They learn how to read and write from there. Therefore, providing free libraries can make equality in society.
In conclusion, this essay discussed that providing free public libraries can make poor kids access knowledge. However, people are likely to read from the internet more than the library. In my point of view, having a free library can play a significant role in society.
