In some countries, university students continue to live with their families while studying, whereas in others, students move to a different city to pursue higher education. Although living away from home has both positive and negative sides, I believe that its advantages are generally more significant. The advantages will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
One major advantage of livng away from home is that students develop a stronger sense of independence. When students move to another city, they must manage their daily routines, create study schedules, and make decisions without relying on their parents. This helps them become more mature and responsible. For example, many students who live in hostels or shared apartments learn how to organise their time effectively and balance household tasks with acedemic cimmitments, which prepares them for adult life.
Another benefit is that wider social and academic exposure students gain. Living in a new environmentallows them to meet people from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, which broadens their prespectives. They may also gain access to better facilities, clubs, and academic resources that may not be available in their hometown. For instance, students who study in major cities often join various students organisations, attend workshops, and collaborate with peers on projects, all of which enhances their communication and teamwork skills.
On the other hand, living away from home can cause financial and emotional difficulties. Rent, food, and transportation costs can be a heavy burden for students who come from middle or low income families. In addition, being far from family support may lead to loneliness and stress, especially for younger students who struggle to adjust to a new city may feel homesick and overwhelmed by academic pressure, which can negatively affect their studies.
In conclusion, although living away from home can create financial and emotional challenges, the advantages of gaining independence and wider exposure are more significant. Therefore, I believe that the benefits of studying in another city outweigh the disadvantages, as this experience prepares students more effectively for future personal and professional life.
