While some people argue that the death penalty is the most appropriate response for those who have committed violent crimes, others believe that such punishment is unacceptable in contemporary society. Sentencing an individual to the death penalty for a violent crime would bring a fear amongst individuals, making our surroundings safer, while such punishment would give a much cruel view of justice in the eyes of the law. I strongly believe that the advantages supersede the disadvantages.
Sentencing the accused to such a harsh punishment has its own upsides, primarily, the instant fear amongst the criminally engaged, causing them to change their approach or better themselves, resulting in a safer neighborhood. Secondly, this would also create a sense of safety amongst citizens, resulting in safer travel and a safer community. Moreover, taking such quick actions would also result in the understanding that nobody is above the law, leading to higher compliance with rules and regulations and eventually preventing them from committing any offence. For instance, in 2015, Singapore noticed significant child trafficking crimes and declared that any offence relating to kidnapping or attempted murder of a minor would result in a death sentence. As a result of this action, by 2025, there have been fewer than 50 cases pertaining to this issue as compared to a decade ago.
While on the other hand, such punishment has a few flaws as well, the main flaw being the punishment of an innocent person due to wrong accusations or conspiracy, leading to an innocent’s death at the hands of the state, while the true criminal would roam freely. Additionally, being sentenced to death would also not give the opportunity to show that people can change, which would not display the willingness for change in society. Furthermore, such punishment would lead to people committing such crimes and fleeing the country. For example, Pablo Escobar escaped from his home country after committing countless murders and drug trafficking to a country that had no extradition treaty with his homeland.
In conclusion, punishing the accused for their violent crimes displays the nation’s strength and shows no tolerance towards illicit activities. While on the other hand, an innocent person might pay the price for another’s crimes. In my opinion, the advantages are significantly greater than the disadvantages.
