In light of recent developments, whether society should give the elderly or youngsters the utmost importance has been a compelling topic for dispute. In some cultures, older people are superior for their prudence and invaluable life experiences, while others prioritize the youth since they contribute to the majority of the workforce. This essay aims at discussing both viewpoints before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, advocates of appreciating the elderly might claim that old people not only possess a profusion of life skills but are also emblematic of traditional values. To delve deeper into this concept, it is of paramount importance to establish that years of refining themselves have bestowed the old with more astute viewpoints and practical experience, an advantage when compared to the young. Given that they have overcome numerous major obstacles of human life such as pursuing education, giving their hand in marriage, and raising a family, the elderly can teach their descendants countless beneficial lessons about life. In addition, the old also acquire priceless traditional values that have been prudently winnowed and passed down for thousands of years, which can also be inherited by their offspring. Therefore, their wisdom should be respected wholeheartedly, and the old should be treated with the utmost dignity and reverence.
On the other hand, proponents of the opposite idea state that young people are crucial to the development of their home country. It is pivotal to qualify this statement by acknowledging that young adults, who constitute most of the workforce, are bestowed with incredible agility, which makes them more capable of adapting to the ever-changing world than their older counterparts. Even more so because of the highly competitive work environment, the young persevere by constantly honing their skills, attaining knowledge, and learning from more experienced co-workers. Notwithstanding their lack of experience, youngsters’ ceaseless ambition to perfect themselves, their flexibility, and their innovative minds serve as valuable tools to create breakthroughs in a myriad of fields. In the context of technological developments, this phenomenon is evident in the case of 21-year-old David Karp, the founder and CEO of Tumblr – a graphic blogging website that has gained immense popularity in the 21st century. His exceptional business idea has reshaped the blogging experience of netizens and was regarded as the cornerstone of social media platforms, making him one of the most eminent individuals in the industry. Suffice it to say that the importance of young adults is undeniable. My standpoint is in perfect alignment with this statement since I also believe that, inasmuch as youngsters make up the majority of the workforce, their tenacity and creativity act as the strongest impetus for their country to flourish.
With what has been discussed, while treating the elderly with the utmost reverence for their wisdom may benefit society, valuing the youth for their resilience and flexibility is also pertinent since they comprise the majority of the workforce. Thus, society should consider prioritizing young generations while no elderly people are depreciated.
