Band 8+: Research shows that increasing numbers of people are now living in mega-cities: cities of more than 20 million inhabitants.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rapid growth of mega-cities, those with populations exceeding 20 million, presents both positive and negative aspects. In my view, it is a change for the worse as it can lead to various challenges.

To begin with, one of the most pressing issues faced by mega-cities is overcrowding, which significantly impacts housing and public services. As more individuals move to large cities, there is a significant lack of affordable housing, causing many residents to live in crowded and inadequate spaces. This overcrowding can lead to various societal problems like heightened stress and reduced mental well-being. In addition, overcrowding in urban areas can strain public services like healthcare and education, leading to decreased quality and accessibility of these essential services. Long wait times, overcrowded classrooms, and limited resources can negatively impact the well-being and overall quality of life for residents.

Migration to mega-cities may open doors for many criminals and fraudsters, and it can be disadvantageous for both economics and the quality of community life. Crime has a big impact on economics. It costs a lot because things get broken, people have to spend more on security, and insurance becomes more expensive. Businesses might not want to start in places with lots of crime, which makes it harder for those areas to grow economically. Also, crime can lead to a decline in the overall quality of life. People may avoid certain areas, and the general atmosphere of the city can become unwelcoming.

To sum up, while megacities offer numerous benefits, issues like overcrowding and rising crime rates often overshadow these advantages, making them less apparent.
