There are many factors that contribute towards an effective learning. While some people argue that the larger the class size, the better, I side with those who feel that fewer students in class is crucial to achieve effective learning experiences.
On the one hand, it could be argued that big class could provide a better studying environment for students. This is because it could enhance the trait of collaborative work ethic amongst students. They are able to collaborate with a larger group of people to do academical works, such as reviewing study materials together, doing group assignments, and discussing a particular study topic. For instance, seminars are aimed at gathering a similar interest group of people, improving the chance for assembling a community of learning. However, I feel this method is not efficient for some people because of how much effort it takes to interact with other learners.
On the other hand, I believe with those who think that a semi-private type of class or fewer students can create a way better learning experience. Firstly, the teacher can tailor a specific approach to their students’ needs effectively. The teacher is able to understand the problem the students encounter, providing a personalized lesson for them, which can therefore accel the learning progress of the students in no time. In addition, small class size can encourage the students to participate more in the classroom, such as asking questions, discussing a particular topic, reviewing past materials, and so on. This behaviour is much more prominent in small class rather than in big class because the lower number of participants in a classroom could create a no-pressure learning environment.
To summarize, although a larger class size could promote self-learning, that it is way easier for students to be involved in the learning process in small classes. Therefore, on balance, I remain firmly convinced that the idea of studying in a small class offers greater advantages than a larger size class.
