It is commonly true that as cities grow more bigger, much people live in homes that have little or no private outside space. While I think there are some advantage to this, I believe it is generally a negative development.
On the one hand, the move towards smaller living areas with limited outdoor space does offer some benefits, mainly for city planning and the cost of house. Firstly, it allows builder to put more homes closely together, which uses expensive city land more effective. This high dense help find a space for new city resident without make the city spreading out too much. Secondly, smaller homes are usually cheaper, which is a great benefits for young people and family who don’t earn much money. Less space inside and no outdoor area to care for mean lower price and cheaper monthly expense.
On the other hand, I feel that the growing lack of private outdoor areas is a bad trend for the health and general happy of people living in cities. The first reason is that it harm the physical and mental health of resident, especially kids. Without simple access to a garden or balcony, chance for basic exercise, fresh air, and time to relax is greatly reduced. This can lead to more stress and too much sitting time. Additionally, it slow down important social and emotional growths in children. Kids loss the opportunity for natural, unplanned play and hands-on time with nature, which are key for boosting creative and learn how to take risk safely.
In conclusion, while I accept that live in smaller homes with little outdoor space helps cities work better and makes housing cheaper, I still believe this trend is harmful overall because of its negative effects on the physical health and development of city dwellers.
