There is an opinion that if a person commits a crime one day, he will always tend to do the same. Personally, I agree with this statement, because a conscious illegal act requires not only specific skills, but also a great will to do that and a moral compromise. Moreover, criminals often lose some social skills and they are no longer able to act the same and have a similar perception with ordinary people that increases the risk of repeating an offence.
The first reason why perpetrators have a tendency of committing a crime again is the easiness of making a moral compromise. They have already proved themselves as people who can break a law in some situations. Thus, there are no proofs that it will not happen again and the law will be respected. For instance, even alcohol can be a necessary condition for a relapse. According to the statistics, many killers in Russia murder again after alcohol abuse. So, everything they need to turn a blind eye to their morality is a drop of alcohol.
The second reason for being a criminal forever is a harmful for psyche environment which deprives them of communication with specialists who can help them to cope with their mental problems and even with ordinary people, such as friends or family. Also, there is a lack of information about a day-to-day life as well as some educational programs. It leads to concentrating on the surrounding they have which consists of immoral and often unstable and unintelligent people. They lose not only their intellect and soft skills, but also an opportunity to work somewhere, since employers reluctantly agree to have such workers. For example, there are cases when former robbers steal something again because they cannot find a proper occupation for a long time and have to survive without money.
In conclusion, some people claim that delinquents are hardly being re-educated and re-habiliated after an incarceration. I am a strong advocate of this opinion, because people who overcome their conscience once may easily do it again. Furthermore, nobody works and educates them in prisons and they communicate most time with the same perpetrators, so there are no prerequisites for changing their previous course.
